HBCU First is partnering with Indeed’s Job Search Academy to promote career exploration, skill-building and readiness
February 16, 2023We have a global career readiness crisis. Getting a good or better job is the
#1 reason why Americans value higher education, yet most universities do not require or expressly encourage their students to include career exploration, job search preparation or career readiness as part of their studies.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics,
the typical American worker (born between 1957-1964)
had 12.4 jobs during their prime work years (18-54 years of age), which means every worker - regardless of their background, industry or profession - should expect and be prepared to manage multiple job and career transitions during their work life.
According to the
NACE 2022 Student Survey, 58% of all responding students reported having visited the career center at some point during their time in College.
Career services may be the most important yet underappreciated function in higher education. The median ratio of students to career services staff sits at 1,583:1 nationally. Only 36% of universities offer for-credit career courses.
(Forbes)As a result, many students leave college with high expectations for their future but without a fundamental understanding of their career options, how to pursue a job search, or employer expectations of their employees.
HBCU First and Indeed have partnered together to create the HBCU Career Academy to address the career readiness issue head on with students participating in the HBCU First internship program, by incorporating
Indeed’s Job Search Academy curriculum into their HBCU First internship experience.
All HBCU First students interns will learn the fundamentals of job search, resume writing, interviewing, job offer evaluation & negotiation, and career management via workshops led by HBCU First peer career coaches, who are mentored by Indeed Career Strategists.
